Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard recently hosted a steel cutting ceremony for the groundbreaking 14,000 TEU Maersk Halifax methanol dual fuel retrofit project on March 8, 2024. This significant event marks the world’s first container vessel methanol dual fuel retrofit.

Attended by representatives from Maersk project team, ABS, and various company leaders and employees, the ceremony highlighted the innovative steps being taken in the maritime industry. The Maersk Halifax is expected to arrive at the shipyard in early July for conversion and repair works that will span over approximately three months.

To ensure the seamless execution of the project, Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard has erected a 500-ton gantry crane above the No.3 dock. Furthermore, the yard is equipped with a range of state-of-the-art cutting machines and welding equipment to support the retrofitting process.

In collaboration with MAN Energy Solutions, Maersk has signed an agreement for the engine retrofit as part of the project. Additionally, new fuel tanks, a fuel preparation room, and a fuel supply system will also be installed during the retrofitting process.

This ambitious project underscores the industry’s commitment to sustainability and the adoption of innovative technologies to reduce emissions and enhance vessel performance. The Maersk Halifax methanol dual fuel retrofit project sets a new standard for eco-friendly shipping practices, paving the way for a more sustainable maritime future.
