The ABQ BioPark is once again hosting its annual celebration of great apes, known as Great Ape-ril. This event, which has been held since 2016, aims to raise awareness and funds for the conservation of gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, and humans (yes, we’re great apes too). Over the years, Great Ape-ril has managed to raise more than ,000 for the cause.
Throughout the month of April, visitors to the zoo can participate in special activities and interact with the primate animal care staff to learn more about these amazing animals. Assistant curator of primates, Josephine Frentzel, explains that the event is all about making connections with great apes and raising awareness about their endangered status.
On select Saturdays, guests can enjoy special Discovery Stations near the primate habitats, where they can ask questions, handle biofacts, and discover ways to help protect great apes. These Saturday events are included with regular admission to the zoo.
For those looking to make a more significant contribution to great ape conservation, exclusive tours of the public primate areas are available. These tours offer a more intimate experience, allowing participants to chat with the primate caregivers and learn about the unique personalities of the great apes at the ABQ BioPark. Reservations for these tours can be made online.
