Partnership formed to provide environmentally friendly marine fuel

Share

Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has taken a significant step towards achieving its carbon reduction goals by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) to supply clean marine fuel. This partnership focuses on bunkering methanol and LNG at Shanghai Port, supporting HMM’s commitment to global shipping cooperation for new energy and sustainable development.

With a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, HMM recognizes the importance of developing port bunkering infrastructure for clean marine fuel. The company is actively working to create sustainable eco-supply chain networks not only at Shanghai Port but also at other major ports such as Singapore and Busan.

As part of its efforts, HMM has signed contracts for nine 9,000 TEU methanol-powered vessels and plans to operate two 7,700 TEU LNG-powered tankers by the end of the year. SIPG, on the other hand, has been at the forefront of promoting green and ecological ports, offering bonded LNG bunkering services since 2022.

Preparations for green methanol bunkering in Shanghai Port have been completed, according to HMM. An HMM official expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, “Through this cooperation with SIPG, we have expanded our green fuel supply chain in China and will continue to strive for various efforts to find a way to go green.”

In a separate endeavor, HMM recently collaborated with Hellmann Worldwide Logistics to reduce carbon emissions by implementing the Green Sailing Service, an eco-friendly transportation solution.

Overall, HMM’s partnership with SIPG and its focus on clean marine fuel underscore the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability and a greener future for the shipping industry.
